Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body, which starts in your low back and branches out to travel down the back of both your legs. The size of this nerve and its length is made abundantly clear when the nerve is irritated or compressed, which can lead to:

  • Pain in your low back
  • Pain that radiates down one side of your buttocks and legs
  • Radiating numbness and tingling in one leg

This condition is referred to as sciatica, which really isn’t a specific medical condition at all, but a symptom of something amiss in your low back.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when your sciatic nerve is compressed, which can happen for many reasons, chief among them:

  • A herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs along your spine

Several factors can put you more at risk for developing sciatica, such as carrying extra weight, age, and pre-existing conditions like diabetes.

What other back problems are treated?

Dr. Diaz and his team are experts when it comes to problems of the spine and they treat a host of conditions that lead to back pain and limited mobility, including:

  • Radiculopathy (pinched nerve)
  • Sacroiliitis (inflammation in your sacroiliac joints)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Post-laminectomy syndrome (failed back surgery syndrome)
  • Coccydynia (coccyx pain)

Whatever your back issue, the odds are that you can find relief at Integrative Spine & Sports.

How are sciatica and back pain treated?

When it comes to back pain, Dr. Diaz and his team take a multi-pronged approach in order to accomplish two goals — to alleviate your immediate discomfort and prevent the problem from recurring.

After an extensive examination, including advanced imaging, Dr. Diaz decides on the best course of action to meet your unique situation and goals, which may include one or more of the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Prescription medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Steroid injections
  • Acupuncture

Dr. Diaz prefers to start out conservatively, only becoming more aggressive if your back problems persist.
